By Ajit Krishna Dasa
Atheism has always been present in human society, but it is simply a sign of ignorance. The foolish conditioned soul thinks he is independent, but he does not realize that his very ability to think is controlled by the Supreme Lord. This book, 108 Problems with Atheism – According to Srila Prabhupada, will systematically expose the defects of atheistic philosophy using the divine knowledge of the Vedic scriptures.
Atheism Begins with a Foolish Assumption
Atheists foolishly think that everything in this world can be explained without God. But they forget that even their so-called intelligence is given by the Supreme Lord. As Krishna says:
“The bewildered spirit soul, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, thinks himself to be the doer of activities, which are in actuality carried out by nature.” (Bhagavad-gītā 3.27)
A man in the grip of material nature is like a puppet. He is controlled by his senses, his mind, and the laws of nature. Yet the atheist is so puffed up that he declares himself the master of his fate. This is ignorance. The devotee, on the other hand, knows that everything, including the functionality of our own mind and intelligence, is moving under Krishna’s direction.
The Contradictions of Atheism
Srila Prabhupada repeatedly explained that atheists are rascals because they contradict themselves at every step. They claim that life has no purpose, yet they try so hard to prove their point. They say morality is relative, yet they protest against injustice. They argue that everything is determined by material forces, yet they claim to be free thinkers. This is the nature of the mūḍhas (fools), as Krishna states:
“Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons, do not surrender unto Me.” (Bhagavad-gītā 7.15)
This is the root problem: the atheist does not surrender. He is covered by illusion and thinks himself very intelligent, but he is simply a fool. His so-called knowledge has no value because he does not know the ultimate goal of life. As long as one remains in this illusion, he will suffer birth after birth.
Why This Book?
This book is not meant for armchair speculation. It is meant to eliminate the foundation of atheism and establish Krishna consciousness as the only logical and practical conclusion. Srila Prabhupada tirelessly exposed atheism as a disease that keeps people bound in the cycle of birth and death. Just as a doctor gives strong medicine to cure a stubborn disease, this book will provide strong arguments to cure the disease of godlessness.
Atheists may mock the idea of God, but Krishna says:
“Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature and My supreme dominion over all that be.” (Bhagavad-gītā 9.11)
This book conclusively shows that atheism is not a sign of intelligence but of ignorance. True knowledge means to understand Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead and to engage in His devotional service. Without this understanding, one remains a fool, no matter how much he claims to know.
Now, let us proceed to dismantle atheism, one problem at a time.
