Atheists Assume Their Senses and Mind Are Reliable Without Proof

By Ajit Krishna Dasa

Atheists place great faith in their senses and mind, believing that their perceptions are accurate. However, the conditioned soul, being covered by ignorance, mistakes illusion for reality and builds his entire worldview on this shaky foundation.

As the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam states:

“Although the duality of the material world does not ultimately exist, the conditioned soul experiences it as real under the influence of his own conditioned intelligence. This imaginary experience of a world separate from Kṛṣṇa can be compared to the acts of dreaming and desiring. When the conditioned soul dreams at night of something desirable or horrible, or when he daydreams of what he would like to have or avoid, he creates a reality that has no existence beyond his own imagination. The tendency of the mind is to accept and reject various activities based on sense gratification. Therefore an intelligent person should control the mind, restricting it from the illusion of seeing things separate from Kṛṣṇa, and when the mind is thus controlled he will experience actual fearlessness.” (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.2.38)

The atheist, relying solely on material perception, fails to recognize that his senses deceive him. He does not question the reliability of his tools of knowledge yet demands absolute proof for the existence of God. This is self-contradictory.

The Four Defects of the Conditioned Soul

Srila Prabhupada frequently explained that the conditioned soul suffers from four fundamental defects:

  1. He is prone to making mistakes. Even the most intelligent person commits errors, so how can an atheist claim infallibility in his reasoning?
  2. He is subject to illusion. A mirage appears as water, but it is not real. Similarly, the world appears independent of God, but this is an illusion.
  3. He has a tendency to cheat. Atheists present their own speculations as truth, even when they lack conclusive evidence.
  4. His senses are imperfect. The eyes cannot see beyond a limited range, the ears cannot hear all frequencies, and so on.

Given these defects, how can the atheist trust his senses and mind to arrive at absolute truth? Without a higher source of knowledge—Vedic revelation—his conclusions remain unreliable and speculative.

The Vedic Solution: Accepting Divine Knowledge

The limitations of the senses and mind can be overcome by following the avaroha-pantha, or the descending process of knowledge. Srila Prabhupada explained that there are two approaches to acquiring knowledge: aroha-pantha (the ascending process) and avaroha-pantha (the descending process). The atheists rely on the aroha-pantha, attempting to reach the truth by speculation and reasoning, which is inherently flawed due to the defects of the conditioned soul. The avaroha-pantha, on the other hand, is the process of receiving knowledge from a perfect source—Krishna and the Vedic scriptures.

Srila Prabhupada emphasized that real knowledge must be received from an authoritative source, just as a child learns about his father by hearing from the mother, the best authority. Similarly, the supreme truth about God cannot be discovered by mental speculation but must be heard from the disciplic succession of realized souls.

Instead of relying on defective senses, the wise person turns to revealed scriptures and the words of realized sages. As Krishna declares:

“Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth.” (Bhagavad-gītā 4.34)

By accepting knowledge from a higher authority, one can overcome the limitations of material perception and understand the ultimate reality—Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Thus, atheism’s foundation is flawed from the very beginning, as it assumes the reliability of sensory perception without justification. In the next section, we will examine atheism’s failure to explain the origin of life.
