One of the greatest failures of atheistic thought is that while atheists observe life all around them, they are unable to account for its origin in a coherent and consistent way. They assume life must have emerged from matter, yet they cannot demonstrate how or why this would happen. Their worldview fails to provide a foundation for explaining life itself. Materialistic scientists propose that life arises from non-life through random chemical reactions, but this claim remains speculative and unsupported by observable evidence. Srila Prabhupada repeatedly challenged this notion, emphasizing that life comes from life, not from dead matter.
As Krishna declares in the Bhagavad-gītā:
“Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.” (Bhagavad-gītā 2.12)
Life is eternal, and the living entity is not a product of material elements but a spiritual being distinct from the body. Atheists, however, refuse to accept this truth and instead speculate endlessly, attempting to explain life through materialistic theories.
The Deficiency of Materialistic Theories
Despite decades of scientific advancements, no experiment has ever demonstrated that life can be produced from non-life. Yet, rather than admitting this failure, atheists postpone their explanation into the indefinite future, hoping that one day science will discover the secret to creating life. Srila Prabhupada compared this to a ‘postdated check’—a promise that holds no real value until it is actually fulfilled. The theory of abiogenesis remains purely hypothetical. Scientists claim that in the distant past, random chemical reactions somehow gave rise to the first living cell, but they have never been able to replicate such an event in the laboratory.
Srila Prabhupada often exposed this contradiction, warning that blind faith in future scientific discoveries is no different from wishful thinking:
“But that is also the future, in a different way. They must accept that they still do not know the truth about the origin of life. Since they are expecting to be able to create life in the future, presently their knowledge must be imperfect. Their proposal is something like giving someone a postdated check. Suppose I owe you ten thousand dollars and I say, “Yes, I will pay you the entire sum with this postdated check. Is that all right?” If you are intelligent, you will see something tangible.” Similarly, the scientists cannot produce even a single blade of grass by biochemistry, yet still they claim that life is produced from matter. What is this nonsense? Is no one questioning this? We can prove that life began from life. Here is the proof: when a father begets a child, the father is living, and the child is living. But where is the scientist’s proof that life comes from matter? We can prove that life begins from life, and we can also prove that the original life is Kåñëa. But what evidence exists that a child is ever born out of a dead stone? The scientists cannot prove that life comes from matter. They are leaving that aside for the future.” (Srila Prabhupada, Science of Self-Realization, Chapter 6)
The atheistic worldview is based on blind faith in unproven theories rather than verifiable truth. The Vedic perspective, in contrast, provides a clear and logical explanation for the origin of life.
The Vedic Explanation: Life Comes from Life
Vedic knowledge teaches that life is not a byproduct of matter but is fundamentally distinct from it. The soul (ātmā) is eternal and is placed within a body by the will of the Supreme Lord. As stated in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam:
“The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone’s heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy.” (Bhagavad-gītā 18.61)
The soul does not arise from matter but is placed in a material body according to its karma and desires. The true origin of life is spiritual, not chemical.
Defeating the Atheistic Argument
If life truly arose from chemical interactions, then why is there no evidence of this process occurring today? Why can scientists not replicate the process in controlled environments? The answer is simple: because life does not originate from matter. Srila Prabhupada made the point that if a dead body contains all the same chemicals as a living body, why can’t scientists bring the dead body back to life? They cannot, and this proves that life is not simply a combination of chemicals.
The atheist, bound by his rejection of God, refuses to acknowledge the clear distinction between life and matter. Instead of accepting Vedic knowledge, he clings to ever-changing scientific theories that fail to provide true understanding.
